I don't believe evil changes with the times though clearly our morals do. I also don't believe evil people are perfectly happy with their lives. Many people inflict evil as a way of projecting their own shadow sides in a (futile) attempt to rid themselves of dark emotions. If you believe Freud, Jung and Fromme, this never works.
