I live in Los Angeles and my heart is with the striking writers and actors. I was an Assistant Director in the 80's and a working screenwriter in the 90's. Most of my friends are in the industry. At the start of the strike, most grips, electricians and camera crew in my orbit were 100% in support of the WGA. Now I'm hearing rumblings against the writers and actors from industry folks. Crew people are having trouble paying mortgages and bills. I've heard complaints about the selfishness of writers and how they're the ones causing "collateral damage" to people in supportive services. I push back against these opinions and remind my friends that the issues are existentially dangerous to everyone. But to those who can't pay their bills, Iger's greedy propaganda is gaining traction. This is worrisome and doesn't bode well for the future. I pray the WGA & SAG can reach out to all industry employees to demonstrate common cause.
