In my experience, location shooting is fantastic even on bad days. Shooting locally is not as fun, particularly when you're on a studio lot. When you're on location, you develop a special bond with the rest of the crew since you're together 24/7. In Los Angeles, you simply go home at the end of the day and it's a slog. The unions make it harder to develop close relationships with those not in your specific field. And locals are much more cynical about the presence of film crews. This detracts from some of the magic of being on a film set.
